West Jessamine High School alum helped St. Catharine Junior College to a school-record 48 wins in 2003. Also played two years at Northern Kentucky University, winning a GLVC championship in 2006. Drafted by Seattle Mariners in 2005 and by the New York Yankees in 2006, when he signed. Helped the Staten Island Yankees win the New York Penn League Championship in 2006 and 2009. Kentucky Baseball Club coach.
Pitched at DII Belmont Abbey College (2009-2011) after receiving All-State honors, as well as conference player of the year in high school. Later transferred to the University of Kentucky and founded the UK Club Softball Team which finished top 12 in the nation in 2014.

Player his college ball at the University of Kentucky. While at Kentucky, Coughlin established himself as one of the top power-hitting catchers in the college game, earning first-team All-America accolades in 2007 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. As a senior, Coughlin totaled a .344 (76-for-221) average, with 53 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, 13 homers and a then-school record 73 RBI. While helping UK to its first Southeastern Conference Championship in his inaugural year in Lexington in 2006, Coughlin batted .325 (66-for-203) with 13 doubles, 17 homers and 55 RBI. 13th round selection in the 2007 MLB Draft by the Diamondbacks, 2009 Arinzona Diamondbacks Minor League Player of the Year.
2009 KHSAA Baseball Coach of the Year. 2009 KHSAA State Championship head coach. Current head coach at Sayre High School. Kentucky Baseball Club Board member and head coach.

Played professionally for Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am league as well Washington Wildthings of the Frontier League. Current Operations Manager and coach with the Kentucky Baseball Club. Head Assistant Coach/Pitching Coach with Lexington Catholic High School.
Played baseball at Milligan College in Johnson City, Tennessee (1988-1991). Led the team his senior season in batting average (.391) and runs batted in (47). 2007 Cal Ripken World Series 12U coach. Coached in Kentucky Baseball Club from 2008-2013.
